The Pittsburgh Steelers added some secondary depth on Wednesday. The team has signed safety Quindell Johnson, his agency, Universal Sports, announced June 4.
Undrafted in 2023 out of Memphis, Johnson has previously spent time with three NFL teams: the Los Angeles Rams (two stints), the San Francisco 49ers, and the Chicago Bears.
Johnson has yet to start an NFL game, but with Chicago in 2023, appeared in nine, logging one interception to go along with three combined tackles. He also played 106 special teams snaps that season.
The 6’0, 206-pound safety received a fifth-round projection in 2023 from NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein, who wrote the following:
Versatile safety prospect with the instincts, toughness and athletic attributes to play for a unit featuring scheme variance. Johnson has adequate NFL size and plays with clean hips and footwork in space. He’s capable of playing high safety or lining up over bigger slot receivers but could be overmatched if asked to carry speedsters around the field. He’s a heads-up run defender ready to mix it up but needs to balance his urgency with better control when it’s time to break down and tackle. Johnson is a capable backup safety and might have the ability to step into a more prominent role in the future.
Johnson reportedly ran a 40-yard dash between 4.47 and 4.51 seconds at his Memphis pro day ahead of the draft. His senior year of college in 2022, he recorded four interceptions.
Keep an eye on Memphis Safety Quindell Johnson for the Steelers as a late day three/priority free agent.
