Iowa's casinos are gearing up for a rush of activity as sports betting becomes a reality in the state. The Ameristar Casino in Council Bluffs is already undergoing remodeling to dedicate a sports bar and betting counter, with dozens of massive TVs and a betting counter just a few feet away. This comes after Iowa's racing and gaming commission unanimously adopted new rules for sports wagering, allowing 18 Iowa casinos, including Horshoe, to begin offering sports betting. The legalization of sports betting was made possible by the Supreme Court's 2018 ruling, which extended sports betting beyond Nevada. General Manager Paul Czak hopes the new amenity will not only bring in new customers but also re-engage existing ones. “I think it has the potential to not only bring new folks in, but to re-engage some of our guests who've been gaming for a while,” he said. With the addition of sports betting, Iowa will become the 11th state to offer legal sports betting to adults 21 and up, with a scheduled start date of August 15 at noon.
