It didn’t take the Steelers long to fill the roster spot opened by Tyler Matakevich landing on injured reserve. Per the NFL transactions sheet, Pittsburgh signed wide receiver and special teams ace Ben Skowronek to its 53-man roster on Tuesday.

Interestingly, the Steelers have not yet officially announced the move. It was first noticed by Alan Saunders of Steelers Now.

Skowronek has been elevated from the Steelers practice squad the last two weeks. He was only eligible for one more promotion during the regular season. Instead, the Steelers decided to officially add him to the 53-man roster.

Skowronek is dealing with a shoulder injury entering Week 3. It’s unclear how severe it is, but given the recent signing, it’s unlikely to hold him back long term.

To fill Skowronek’s practice squad slot, the Steelers added wide receiver Jaray Jenkins. Jenkins spent the summer with the Steelers and made some plays in the preseason. His signing was first reported by Brooke Pryor.

Jenkins is a 6’2, 204-pound receiver who ran a 4.6-second 40-yard dash coming out of college.

These roster moves mark the end to a busy Tuesday for the Steelers, which also saw the team move Matakevich to IR and shuffle their practice squad, signing defensive backs James Pierre and D’Shawn Jamison and releasing wide receiver Shaquan Davis and cornerback Zyon Gilbert.

As reported later in the day by NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the team worked out three defensive backs in total on Tuesday. Out of the bunch, the team decided to sign Jamison to the practice squad.

But the others could still be a name to look out for in future transactions.

Henderson is the most recognizable name on the list. The Jacksonville Jaguars’ first-round pick in 2020, the former LSU corner struggled with injury and was later traded to the Carolina Panthers for a fifth-round pick in 2021.

The 6’0, 204-pound corner has played in 49 career NFL games, starting 32. Over his career, Henderson has recorded 172 total tackles, three interceptions, and 16 passes defensed. In 2023 with the Panthers, he started seven games, recording 39 total tackles and two passes defensed.

Henderson signed with the Houston Texans as a free agent in 2024, but was released during cutdowns.

Johnson, on the other hand, was an undrafted free agent signing by the Los Angeles Rams in 2023. With Memphis in 2022, the 6’2, 208-pound safety recorded 77 total tackles, four interceptions, and four passes defensed. He was hand-timed at his pro day running a 40-yard dash between 4.47 and 4.51 seconds.

Johnson played in nine games for the Chicago Bears in 2023, recording three total tackles, one interception, and one pass defensed. He made Chicago’s initial practice squad in 2024 but was later released.

Entering Week 3 against the Los Angeles Chargers, the Steelers have a full roster and practice squad, as well as some free agents to keep an eye on, following a day full of roster shuffling.
