Steelers snap counts: Who stepped up for George Pickens, DeShon Elliott and Larry Ogunjobi in Week 15

Welcome back to Steelers snap counts following a Week 15 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Steelers Week 15 snap count takeaways

Calvin Austin III and Van Jefferson were tied as the Steelers’ top receiver this week, with each playing 80% of Pittsburgh’s offensive snaps. A big increase in snaps for Austin (35% last week), who was also the Steelers’ leading receiver against Philadelphia with 65 receiving yards.
Scotty Miller dropped from WR2 last week in terms of snap counts to WR4. Mike Williams jumped from WR5 to WR3, but only played 37%, getting just two targets against the Eagles.
Why looking at the snap counts matters: Jaylen Warren saw just four carries on Sunday, but he was still the Steelers’ most-played running back, logging 51% of the offensive snaps. Najee Harris played 34%, while Cordarrelle Patterson played 15%. The takeaway? The Steelers really like Warren in pass protection.

Joey Porter Jr., Minkah Fitzpatrick and Patrick Queen all played 100% of defensive snaps on Sunday. That’s been the norm this season, but this week that meant playing 77 defensive snaps (each player recorded five additional special teams snaps).
Unsurprisingly, safety Damontae Kazee saw a big boost in snaps with DeShon Elliott out, playing 81% of defensive plays.
T.J. Watt’s injury affects the outside linebacker data a bit here, but it’s still clear that the Steelers want to heavily rotate their top four. Watt played 66% of the defensive snaps, with Alex Highsmith playing 62%, Nick Herbig 39%, and Preston Smith 36%.
It’s been a roller coaster for Beanie Bishop Jr.’s snap counts as of late. Last week he played 80% of defensive snaps. This week? Just 30%. Cam Sutton’s playing time saw a bit of a boost but not a huge one, logging 39% of defensive snaps.
If it isn’t clear already, the Steelers were emphasizing shutting down the Eagles’ run game, with inside linebacker Elandon Roberts playing 62% of defensive snaps to Payton Wilson’s 36%.
Keeanu Benton had another game in the 70% of defensive snaps range. With Larry Ogunjobi out, the Steelers used Dean Lowry (47%) and Montravius Adams (35%) in his first game back from injured reserve to take up snaps on the defensive line. Isaiahh Loudermilk, who played 51% of snaps last week following Ogunjobi’s injury, dropped to DL5, still playing 32% of defensive snaps.
The Steelers’ offensive-to-defensive plays ratio this week: 41:77. Brutal.

Making the most of it award

Mark Robinson played just 16 snaps overall but gave the Steelers one of their biggest plays of the game with his forced fumble on an Eagles’ punt return. That play put the Steelers in position to score their first points of the game.
