Steelers GM Omar Khan speaks out about George Pickens trade

The Pittsburgh Steelers made one of the most noteworthy moves of the NFL offseason on Wednesday, trading wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys for a third-round pick and a 2027 Day Three pick swap. As rookie minicamp began for Pittsburgh on Friday, general manager Omar Khan spoke to the media about the trade, saying it was best for all involved.

“The trade sort of happened quickly,” Khan said. “We had some teams who inquired during the draft. Nothing that really made sense. The Cowboys reached out… they proposed something for us to think about. We had conversations internally. We also had some conversations with George’s agent, Dave [Mulugheta] who I have a good relationship with. We discussed where things have been with George, where they are… this trade made sense for everyone.”

Khan also added that he feels comfortable with the Steelers’ depth, but didn’t rule out adding another receiver.

“We made the investment with DK,” Khan said. “We’ve had another year with some of the young guys and gotten to know them and watch them develop. We add Robert Woods. Roman {Wilson] is healthy… we have a good group…”

Multiple names remain on the free agent market, including Amari Cooper and Keenan Allen. Pittsburgh could also pursue another trade with a team like the Houston Texans or Green Bay Packers, who have a large influx of receivers.

Regardless, the Steelers don’t seem too antsy at the moment on speeding to the market, either free agent or trade, to land another pass-catcher, at least not right this second. That could change as the offseason carries on.
