It’s now the end of March and the Pittsburgh Steelers have yet to find a resolution at quarterback. It appears they could be making progress in their courting of the mysterious veteran Aaron Rodgers, who is at the Steelers’ facility early Friday, Gerry Dulac reports. Dulac noted in a follow up, however that, “Sources have cautioned a commitment from Rodgers may not come today, if at all, and he is just visiting with coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Omar Khan.”
Rodgers has been mulling his options in free agency since his release from the New York Jets, having been in talks with quarterback-needy teams like the Steelers, New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings. While the Steelers have waited on a decision from Rodgers, they brought back old friend Mason Rudolph on a two-year, $8-million dollar deal.
If Rodgers does make his way to the Steel City, I’d bet the Steelers and GM Omar Khan would feel more comfortable waiting a year to address the position and bypassing Dart should he be available. If they don’t sign the enigma or bring back Russell Wilson, they are more likely to use a first-round pick on a quarterback and have Rudolph act as a short-term bridge—heck, maybe for just a few games.
Dart is quite the polarizing player. He’s been mocked as high as pick seven to the New York Jets, and as low as falling out of the first round completely. I wrote about Dart last month, and you can find that here.
Of course, the opportunity to draft a signal-caller in the third round or later will also present itself. But that would mean they plan on Rudolph being the guy, given that one of those players, such as Alabama’s Jalen Milroe, would be a developmental piece.
The moral of the story is that the Steelers need to force Rodgers to make a decision before the draft. That should be their deadline. Somehow, he’s already been both a distraction and a detriment — and he’s not even on the team.
