Former Steelers RB Najee Harris says offense ‘didn’t have identity’ in Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Steelers shocked many fans last summer when they declined to pick up the fifth-year option of running back Najee Harris. After what was three straight 1,000-yard seasons at the time, it felt easy to pen in that he would be with the Steelers through 2026. Instead, he signed with the Los Angeles Chargers at the beginning of free agency and has taken a few subtle jabs at the Steelers.

During his introductory press conference, Harris noted how blown away he was by the Chargers’ facility and that not everyone in the league has a place like the Chargers do. Considering Harris has only played for the Steelers, it wasn’t hard to connect the dots to what he was saying – the Steelers’ facilities aren’t great. Now, Harris says the Steelers lacked any sort of identity on offense.

“While I was elevating, I feel like time just ran out,” Harris said to CBS Los Angeles. “[We were] a team where we lost Ben [Roethlisberger], we lost a lot of O-line. We just didn’t know anything on offense. We didn’t have an identity. We had a young guy come in at quarterback. I was young. The team was young. I really didn’t have [anybody] to learn from on the offensive side.”

While the comments may come off as harsh, they also aren’t unfair, either. Ever since Ben Roethlisberger retired, the overwhelming opinion from fans is that the Steelers offense has been poor and that they lacked any sort of true identity.

The Steelers are set to travel to SoFi Stadium to play the Chargers in 2025.
