Former Steelers WR George Pickens cancels Pittsburgh youth football event

The Pittsburgh Steelers traded polarizing wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys back at the beginning of May. This came after multiple incidents, both on the field and behind the scenes, in which Pickens had become too much of a headache for the team. Pittsburgh traded for DK Metcalf back in March, which we now know was to replace Pickens when they eventually moved him.

And while the Steelers’ former second-round pick now dons a Cowboys uniform, he still had commitments to a youth football camp in the Pittsburgh area. However, he has cancelled his appearance at the event just four days in advance.

TrueEdge Sports runs the camp, and sent an email due to Pickens’ cancellation.

“Our team at TruEdge was fully prepared to host a camp this Saturday because we were led to believe George would follow through on his commitment,” the e-mail reads in part, via Delilah Bourque of Sports Illustrated. “His sudden decision to back out not only reflects a disappointing lack of accountability, but also shows a disregard for the families and children who were excited to meet him. We are incredibly disappointed by his actions and his actions do not express the goals or motives of TruEdge Sports.”

WOW!

George Pickens bailed on his sold-out youth camp at Highmark Stadium.
Said he’d go after the trade — then backed out.

But last minute Pat Freiermuth stepped up.

Wasn’t his camp or his job — but he showed up anyway.

Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth is set to replace Pickens at the camp, as are multiple other Steelers yet to be named.
