The Pittsburgh Steelers have wrapped up the 2024 regular season and will take on the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card round. Ahead of the playoffs, though, I wanted to highlight the top performers of the regular season, so let’s dive in.
MVP: K Chris Boswell
Not even a joke in the slightest. Boswell won two games for the Steelers by himself, going six-for-six against the Falcons and Ravens in wins where his kicks were the only points the Steelers scored. He finished the year going 41-of-44 on the year, and his 41 made kicks are the second-most in NFL history.
Offensive Player of the Year: TE Pat Freiermuth
Freiermuth led the Steelers in catches and touchdown receptions, catching 65 of his 78 targets on the season. Plus, his seven scores tied his career-high which was originally set in his rookie year. His 65 catches are also a new career high.
Defensive Player of the Year: DT Cam Heyward
Heyward had the best year of his career at age 35. He had 71 tackles, eight sacks, and 12 tackles for loss, as well as 11 passes batted down. If you’d say T.J. Watt is more deserving, I wouldn’t argue too hard with you, but he also had multiple games where, frankly, he was a non-factor. Heyward was the more consistent player.
Rookie of the Year: C Zach Frazier
Frazier stepped in from Day One and showed he was a future All-Pro at the position. He allowed just one sack all season, as well as just 12 pressures, per PFF. The Steelers have their center of the future and they knocked that pick out of the park.
Most Improved Player: WR Calvin Austin III
I will be the first to admit I was very wrong about Calvin Austin. I didn’t see him becoming much of a threat in the offense, but he did just that. He had 36 catches for 548 yards and four touchdowns, and added a punt return for a touchdown against the Giants. Austin carved out a role for himself in the offense, and the Steelers have a fun player in him.
