Pittsburgh Steelers failed to acquire Tampa Bay Buccaneers star

For the second consecutive year, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been the talk of the NFL when it comes to making moves involving wide receivers. They traded for DK Metcalf back in March, and then traded away George Pickens in May, sending him to the Dallas Cowboys.

Ever since, the Steelers have reportedly been trying to acquire another pass-catcher for Aaron Rodgers to distribute the ball to. Chris Olave, Jonnu Smith, and Kyle Pitts have all been names linked to the Steelers in terms of phone calls being made with interest in making a trade on Pittsburgh’s end.

Another name has been revealed as someone the Steelers had an interest in during the early stages of free agency, but ultimately, it fell through. Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin was on the Steelers’ radar, but ended up staying in Tampa Bay on a three-year, $66 million deal. Dan Pompei of The Athletic reports that the Steelers and Patriots were the two teams leading the way in terms of interest for the Penn State product.

“Four other teams wanted Godwin, with the Patriots and Steelers at the forefront, according to Godwin,” Pompei writes.

Godwin is coming off a season-ending ankle injury he suffered during the Bucs’ Week 7 Monday night loss to the Baltimore Ravens. That said, he is a former Pro Bowl receiver who is one of the more underrated and underappreciated receivers of his era, considering he’s had to share the spotlight with future Hall of Famer Mike Evans.

Godwin has 579 career receptions and 39 touchdowns in his eight-year career.
