Pittsburgh Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger addresses perceived tension with Mason Rudolph

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to roll through OTAs, as do all 32 teams around the NFL. Recently, Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco was asked about being a mentor, to which he gave a very refreshing answer.

“If I say I don’t want to be a mentor, I look bad,” Flacco said. “If I say I do want to be a mentor, then I look like an idiot that doesn’t care about being good and playing football. So, it’s one of those questions that no matter what I say, you guys can write what you want to write about it.

His answer earned praise from former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger during the latest episode of Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger. It also led to a conversation about the perceived issues he had with Mason Rudolph when the Steelers drafted him back in 2017. Roethlisberger seemed to want to get his thoughts on the issue off his chest, making it clear he had, and still has, no issues with Rudolph.

“It’s the same thing when we drafted Mason,” Roethlisberger said. “I made comments about like, ‘why did we draft Mason?’ It wasn’t a shot at Mason. I didn’t have a problem with Mason. They could have drafted Patrick Mahomes or whoever. It wasn’t a shot at the person. It was, ‘How are we making our team better by drafting a guy in the third round that’s going to be a backup quarterback? How’s that helping our team? The guy may not see the field.’ I would have said the same thing – we had Maurkice Pouncey – if they had drafted a center. Like, what are we doing?”

Roethlisberger reiterated that he never had any issue with Rudolph.

“It came across like I had a problem with Mason,” Roethlisberger said. “Are we boys, are we friends? No. We don’t need to be, though. But I’m rooting for him. I want him to be successful. I want him to lead this team… I didn’t have a problem with him. I had a problem – I guess it was with the Steelers… but when he got drafted, it wasn’t at him. It was, ‘How is that helping our team win a championship now?’”

At the time of writing, Rudolph would be the starting quarterback, as Aaron Rodgers has yet to sign with Pittsburgh.
