The Steelers have been in the market for another playmaker after trading WR George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys a few weeks ago. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, former Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills WR Gabe Davis, will visit the Steelers Thursday.
Davis spent last season with the Jaguars, appearing in 10 games and only catching 20 passes for 239 yards. He suffered a torn meniscus late in the season and was released by the Jaguars this offseason with a failed physical designation.
He’s remained unsigned, and it doesn’t appear interest has been very high across the league, but Davis might not have to look too far if he needs someone to vouch for him.
There probably isn’t anyone in Pittsburgh who knows Davis better than new Steelers running back Kenneth Gainwell. The two co-own a training facility in Winter Park, Florida, near Davis’s alma mater, UCF. They are such close friends that Gainwell appeared in Davis’ wedding this offseason. Gainwell was asked about Davis on Tuesday after Steelers OTA’s.
“That’s like my brother,” Gainwell said, via Alan Saunders of Steelers Now. “I can’t wait to see him.”
Gainwell also thinks Davis can be a difference-maker for the team.
“Everybody kinda [knows] what type of player he is,” Gainwell said. “We’ve seen him with Buffalo against Kansas City, four touchdowns in one game. The type of attitude he brings towards the game, he’s just a baller.”

Davis is a big-bodied wideout who would bring much-needed size to a smaller room. The Steelers’ depth chart at wide receiver includes two-time Pro Bowler D.K. Metcalf, Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson, and the newly signed Robert Woods. He’s also a big-play threat. Throughout his career, he’s averaged 16.2 yards per catch, one of the highest rates in the NFL.
The Steelers hoped to add an explosive element to their offense when they inked Gainwell this offseason. Could they do the same by pairing him with his old pal?
