The Pittsburgh Steelers were reportedly in conversations with the Miami Dolphins late last week regarding a potential trade for Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith. The veteran is seeking a new contract, but his preferred choice is to remain in Miami, according to Schefter.

Schefter reported Tuesday that the Steelers were set to host free agent wide receiver Gabe Davis for a visit on Thursday, and then noted that they were unlikely to trade for Smith.

“Pittsburgh has been seeking additional receiving help and has inquired about, but is not expected to trade for, Miami TE Jonnu Smith,” Schefter said.

However, just hours later, Schefter is saying that a trade involving Smith and the Steelers is still alive.

“The Steelers renewed conversations today with Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith, who is seeking a new contract,” Schefter said. “The trade between the Steelers and Dolphins is still alive, per source.”

The Steelers extended tight end Pat Freiermuth last offseason, giving him a four-year, $48.4 million deal. They also have Darnell Washington as the No. 2 tight end, though he is used predominantly as an extension of the offensive line. Should the Steelers acquire Smith, one would guess he would be used more as a slot receiver than a traditional hand-in-the-dirt tight end.
