While the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback situation still remains somewhat unclear, one thing that is blatantly obvious is that they had no interest, and still have no interest in bringing back Russell Wilson.
Despite Wilson being a Pro Bowl selection in 2024, and Omar Khan saying that the preference would be to have either Justin Fields or Russell Wilson as their starter in 2025, Pittsburgh has shown no interest in re-signing Wilson after Fields left for the New York Jets. Why is that? It’s likely that it stems from irritation from the Steelers toward Wilson after reports of his strained relationship with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith surfaced. Per Alan Saunders of Steelers Now, Wilson “ruffled feathers” in the organization, as the leak was largely believed to come from his camp. Now, Bob Labriola of Steelers.com also chimes in on the relationship between Wilson and the organization, saying it looks beyond repair.
“The fact that it hasn’t happened leads me to believe there is a fracture somewhere in the relationship between the Steelers and Russell Wilson too deep to overcome,” Labriola writes.
If the Steelers really wanted Wilson back, he would have been under contract the second Fields signed with the Jets. It’s pretty apparent now that the Steelers’ plan is Aaron Rodgers or Mason Rudolph for 2025, with a potential hint of Jalen Milroe or Jaxson Dart. On top of that, it looks very possible that the Steelers will face Wilson in 2025, as he is still in the sights of the Cleveland Browns.
