Steelers designate OL to return to practice from IR Tuesday ahead of Wild Card vs. Ravens

The Pittsburgh Steelers officially designated veteran offensive tackle Calvin Anderson to return to practice from injured reserve on Tuesday ahead of the Wild Card Round, the team announced. He was placed on injured reserve with a groin injury ahead of Week 15.

Anderson was originally signed in late September following a season-ending knee injury to first-round rookie Troy Fautanu. He’s been active for four games this year and played just nine snaps in the reprieve of teammates, including 10 snaps at left tackle in place of starter Dan Moore Jr. and one snap at right tackle in place of Broderick Jones.

Though he’s not played an integral role on the offense to this point in the season, Anderson does have some experience as a starter, including seven starts with the Denver Broncos in the 2022 season. He’s primarily played at left tackle for most of his career but does have experience at right tackle, where he played the bulk of his snaps in his 2023 season.

Originally an undrafted free agent out of the 2019 class, Anderson first signed with the New England Patriots and eventually found his way to the 53-man roster in Denver, where he spent three seasons before rejoining the Pats last season.

The 21-day practice window having been activated means that the Steelers must add him to the active 53-man roster by January 28, or else he will go on season-ending IR. Of course, that deadline only matters should the Steelers make it to the Super Bowl, with the AFC Championship game scheduled for Sunday, January 26 and Super Bowl 59 scheduled for Sunday, February 9.
