The first of two Christmas Day games is officially in the books, as the Pittsburgh Steelers fall to 10-6 with a home loss against the Kansas City Chiefs (15-1), officially allowing them to clinch the No. 1 seed in the AFC, earning a first-round bye and home field advantage in the playoffs.
“Missed” was the word of the day. Missed opportunities. Missed throws. Missed reads. Missed everything. Week 17 marked Pittsburgh’s third straight loss. The defense continued to struggle, allowing 400+ net yards for the third consecutive game. The Steelers were unable to capitalize on potential turnovers. The offense was unable to find much rhythm. Bad, bad, bad — all around.
The first quarter offered Steelers fans an alarming start, as the Chiefs went up 13-0, as Patrick Mahomes threw for 97 yards and two touchdowns, including a score for rookie Xavier Worthy and an 11-yard score to WR Justin Watson of all people. The Steelers didn’t get much of anything done outside of a 41-yard bomb from Wilson to Pickens. Russell Wilson missed yet another opportunity to capitalize inside the red zone after a rushing touchdown from Jaylen Warren was called back due to a holding call against TE Darnell Washington, throwing an interception on the following play.
Momentum shifted in Quarter 2, however; the Steelers picked up some momentum offensively. Russell Wilson went 8-of-11 for 57 yards, while Jaylen Warren got it going on the ground, averaging 5.5 yards per carry. He wasn’t the only one to get the run going, however! Wilson got in on the action, too, capping off a 72-yard drive with a rushing touchdown, of all things. The Steelers entered the half down 13-7, with plenty of plays left on the field that could have handed them a lead, failing to take advantage of them.
The Chiefs received the ball coming out of the half, but after a 54-yard drive, the Steelers defense were able to hold the Chiefs to a field goal, taking a 16-7 lead, though the Steelers answered right back with a field goal drive of their own to bring it back within six. The team got particularly lucky on that drive, as Boswell missed his first attempt from 39 yards but was gifted a second opportunity thanks to a neutral zone infraction from Justin Reid.
After the Steelers’ final score, things got out of hand fairly quickly. The Chiefs drove for a touchdown drive (followed by a failed two-point conversion) to make it 22-10. The Steelers turned over their next possession on a fumble from Pat Freiermuth, followed by another Chiefs’ touchdown (Travis Kelce’s 1,000th career TD), a turnover by Pittsburgh on downs and another punt. The game ended 29-10, though it somehow felt much worse than that.
All in all, it was a brutal showing for Pittsburgh in Week 17; too many plays were left on the field on both offense and defense. Can they salvage their season, which is quickly spiraling?
