Steelers news: Free agent WR Tyler Boyd ‘absolutely’ open to playing for Pittsburgh in 2025

“I got a few more years in me,” said free agent wide receiver Tyler Boyd at the youth football camp he hosted in Clairton, Pennsylvania, June 28.

Speaking to Pittsburgh Sports Now’s Austin Bechtold, Boyd talked about the importance of giving back to his community — and also the odds of him returning to Pittsburgh as an NFL player.

“It kinda got quiet,” he said of his free agent market. He added he expects teams to show interest in the next few weeks with training camp around the corner. “But for now, I’m just focusing on the kids.”

Boyd has a quite the history with Pennsylvania football, making a name for himself as a WPIAL star at Clairton High School before playing college football at Pitt. However, in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, it was the Cincinnati Bengals who selected Boyd.

Boyd recorded 6,000 receiving yards and 31 touchdowns over eight seasons as a Bengal, including two thousand-plus yard seasons. He spent a one-season stint with the Tennessee Titans in 2024, where he recorded 39 receptions for 390 yards.

There were multiple reports of mutual interest between Boyd and the Steelers last offseason, but ultimately a deal didn’t occur. Mark Kaboly of The Athletic reported that money was the issue, and also that a player in the Steelers locker room wasn’t keen on adding the former Bengal, possibly due to Boyd’s past criticism of the team.

While speaking to Bechtold on Saturday, Boyd said he’d “absolutely” be open to playing for the Steelers. “All my family is here … I’d be able to have the majority — all of my family be able to support me. I might be able to get everybody tickets,” he laughed.

“I believe so,” he said when asked if it was a realistic possibility for him to return to Pittsburgh. “I’m real cool with (Mike) Tomlin. You know, he’s always been a good person … When I was at Pitt we had a good relationship.”

Now 30 years old, Boyd has primarily been used as a slot receiver over his NFL career. He ran just 63 routes from a wide alignment in 2024 per NFL Pro.
