INDIANAPOLIS, IN – – The NFL Combine is where deals begin to get put in motion around the league. When it comes to the Steelers, they have a lot of deals to consider, specifically at the quarterback position. Here is what I’m hearing in Indianapolis.

Russell Wilson is likely returning to Pittsburgh

I’m told ownership prefers Wilson to Justin Fields and that the Steelers have given an offer to Wilson, it’s just a matter of if he takes it or not. And while Wilson’s production took a big dive at the end of the year while Pittsburgh lost their last five games, the peaks they saw at the beginning – specifically with the deep passing game – seem to be the sticking point. While the Steelers won four of their first six games with Fields, it certainly didn’t look like they were keen on keeping him as the starter and switched to Wilson as quickly as possible. This isn’t to say anything is a done deal – it’s certainly not. But at the time of writing, I’d expect Wilson to be the one who the Steelers bring back, despite how some in the building may feel about it.

Najee Harris is not returning

There were some murmurs that the Steelers would perhaps try to bring back Harris in free agency, but from the sounds of it that won’t be happening. For starters, the way Omar Khan answered the question about Harris in his press conference on Tuesday signified that they were officially moving on.

“Najee’s had four straight 1,000 yard seasons for us,” Khan said. “Lot of respect for what he’s done.”

That doesn’t sound like a general manager who is planning to keep a guy around. In terms of what Harris’ market will be and where he’ll land, that will be determined in a few weeks time – but it won’t be Pittsburgh.

Keep an eye on Courtland Sutton

The Steelers have wanted Sutton dating back to last offseason. They reached out to the Denver Broncos on multiple occasions both before and during the 2024 NFL Draft to try and put together a trade, but were turned away both times. This offseason may be different, though. I’m told it “sounds like Courtland Sutton could be heading Pittsburgh’s way.” The star receiver is coming off the best year of his career, posting career highs in catches (81) as well as posting 1,081 yards and eight touchdowns. Should the Steelers end up re-signing Wilson, a move like this would make even more sense considering Sutton and Wilson are good friends. Dating back to last year when these original talks were taking place, a source tells me that Sutton would “love” to play with Wilson again. He’s entering the final year of his contract with the Broncos, and Denver isn’t planning on paying him. Ergo, it makes sense to move him in exchange for draft capital if you’re the Broncos. Should this come to fruition, having a wide receiver duo of Sutton and George Pickens would already be worlds better than what the Steelers had a season ago.
