The Pittsburgh Steelers have finally landed a big-time receiver in a blockbuster trade.
Pittsburgh has acquired D.K. Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for their 2025 second-round pick and a swap of their sixth and seventh-round picks, Adam Schefter reports. The news comes several hours following a report from Schefter indicating that the Seahawks had lowered their requested trade compensation for Metcalf from a first-round pick to a second.
On top of that, the Steelers are giving Metcalf a five-year, $150 million extension to keep him in Pittsburgh for a long time. That $150 million deal earns Metcalf the largest contract for a wide receiver in terms of total value in NFL history, just ahead of Justin Jefferson at $140 million, though his $30 million average annual value (AAV) is tied for fifth at the position, per Over The Cap.
Metcalf, now 27 years old, was a former second-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft — a 2x NFL Pro Bowler with six consecutive campaigns of 900+ receiving yards and five touchdowns.
At 6-foot-3 and 228 pounds, Metcalf is a literally huge specimen, ranked in the 98th percentile in arm length (82 7/8”) and wingspan (34 7/8”), with hands at just under 10”. He ran a ridiculous 4.33-second 40-yard dash and ranked 90th+ percentile in his vertical and broad jump tests per MockDraftable, however, his change-of-direction drills were poor, which lost him some draft stock in the grand scheme of things coming out of Ole Miss.
Pittsburgh now pairs Metcalf with wide George Pickens (for now) to give themselves a great pairing of deep ball threats who can take the lid off any defense in the NFL.
DK Metcalf gained 374 yards specifically on Go routes in 2024, the 2nd-most in the league (Justin Jefferson, 387). Since entering the NFL in 2019, no player has more receiving yards on Go routes than Metcalf (1,765).

Now comes the question of who will be throwing them the ball. The Steelers still don’t have a starting quarterback under contract ahead of the new league year, as Justin Fields and Russell Wilson are each set to become free agents at the start of the new league year.
Considering Metcalf’s friendship and history with Russell Wilson in Seattle, is this a sign that Wilson is coming back for 2025? We’ll find out soon enough, though a Sunday report from NFL insider Diana Russini indicated that the Steelers are expected to make an offer for pending free agent Sam Darnold. Meanwhile, reports regarding Fields have indicated that the Steelers are “not close” on a deal and that he is expected to test free agency.
Metcalf’s move is now the latest move putting the Seahawks in line for a major rebuild, having traded starting quarterback Geno Smith, released star WR Tyler Lockett
