The understated theme of the Steelers’ 2025 free agent class

The Pittsburgh Steelers, as a franchise, are tied for the most Super Bowl wins in NFL history with six Lombardi Trophies.

But the last time the Steelers won the big game was the 2008-09 season. As a result, there’s not one active player in the NFL who’s won a ring with the black and gold.

But Pittsburgh’s recent roster moves, including a trade for the Dolphins’ Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith, indicate a clear desire to get back to that status as soon as possible.

And what better way to build a championship culture than bringing in players who’ve been there, done that?

Ramsey, of course, won Super Bowl LVI with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022, and he’s not the only active Steeler with a ring.

You can see the full list below:

Isaac Seumalo (Eagles)
Scotty Miller (Buccaneers)
Cordarrelle Patterson (Patriots)
Ben Skowronek (Rams)
Darius Slay (Eagles)
Kenneth Gainwell (Eagles)
Juan Thornhill (Chiefs — twice!)
Robert Woods (Rams)
Aaron Rodgers (Packers)
Jalen Ramsey (Rams)

Notice a trend? Six of those players — over half of the list — were added in the 2025 offseason. Excluding expected futures signings, it includes about half of the team’s free agent class.

Is this a groundbreaking observation? Not really. Generally, there aren’t many to make in mid-July before training camp. Super Bowl-winning teams, by nature of being very good, tend to hemorrhage free agents the following offseason. So it’s not a huge surprise to see a number of reigning NFL champions populating new rosters this time of year.

I definitely wouldn’t go as far as saying Steelers general manager Omar Khan heavily weighted rings when putting together his free agency approach. But the Steelers’ sudden glut of Lombardi-winning players (including two from the Eagles’ 2024 squad) does seem noteworthy.

Why? Because homegrown Steelers don’t have much playoff success to their names. The team hasn’t won a postseason game since the 2016-17 season, and only two active Steelers players — Cam Heyward and Chris Boswell — were around to participate.

Of course, Mike Tomlin was also there. He even has a Super Bowl win on his head coaching resume. But having similar, and more recent, experience on the roster matters as well.

The NFL season, especially with the playoffs tacked on, is a grind. Steelers fans know all too well how different a team can look midseason versus the beginning of January. Winning a Super Bowl is a marathon, and it takes more than just talent to accomplish.

And given the Steelers roster’s lack of big-game experience — and success — as a whole, you can bet that list of 10 players above (maybe eight or nine, depending on roster cuts), will be valuable resources if the team has a chance at a playoff run in 2025.
